Houzz, which launched in 2009 and is still privately owned, is catching up with a bunch of retailers who have already utilized some form of augmented reality or 3D imaging to place furniture overlays over real-life spaces. But most of the previous 3D examples we’ve seen, including apps from Wayfair and Lowe’s Home Improvement, have run on phones built to Google Tango specifications. The Houzz app uses the existing sensors and camera in the iPhone to produce its AR images. (Wayfair also has a “View in Room” feature in its iPhone app, not to be confused with “View in My Room,” but it uses 2D imaging.)

Houzz, the home decor company that combines professional renovation services, design ideas, and furniture shopping into one app, just rolled out an update to its iOS app that includes 3D imaging features. That means that users can now place a virtual furniture item or accessory in a room and get a sense of how well it will fit or look in the space before buying.

Your go-to for tongue-in-cheek birthday cards, suggestive needlepoints and cutesy craft goods allows you to buy and sell used furniture, too. You can search for just about anything—like a baby-blue media cabinet—and there’s a good chance someone’s trying to get rid of one. It’s like shopping at a yard sale, but without waking up early and leaving your bed at an ungodly hour.

When shopping for furniture you could a) jot down all of your room measurements into your phone’s notepad and then try to visualize what goes where when you get to the store. Or, b) download Photo Measures. The app let’s you draw all of the dimensions of walls and flooring, directly onto a picture of the room.

Ric Laverie May 13, 2017 After trying to order the same table 4 times, they told me the item is not available and removed from the website. But all they did was rename the item, and change the price. Possibly the worst online shopping experience I’ve ever had, the folks at customer service are great and pleasant. But doesn’t make up for the shortcoming of the company. Full Review

Monique Levers May 13, 2017 Love Wayfair bought quite a few things and I am not disappointed. Shipping is prompt with packages coming before expected delivery dates at times. Pleasant shopping experience wide selection and customer reviews are very helpful and mostly true to word. The customer reviews were a huge help in making my choices. Brings out the designer in all of us.

We’re always advocates for checking out big purchases in person, because there’s nothing worse than ordering a sofa online only to find it’s stiff as a board on arrival. However, shopping the interwebs for home decor is an easy alternative to hitting up crowded stores. And with so many amazing sources for stylish and affordable goods at your fingertips, it’s almost scary how fast you could decorate your entire home.

You can set a location and search nearby sellers or curated collections, but Krrb does not deal with the transactions or delivery. You can post via the website or the app, and there's even a function that aggregates postings from other websites like eBay and Etsy right to Krrb. They don't charge commission, but listings cost “credits” that you buy or earn through things like filling out a profile, shopping, or social sharing. Get started here.
